This is from the past month or so, I haven’t been posting about projects because I’ve been busy busy.
So this scarf was the first major project I started on, technically back in September. I bought the roving at the sheep and wool festival because it reminded me of persona 5, which is one of Jade’s favorite video games. I bought it, spun it on drop spindle and then crocheted a scarf for her.
At one point, I restarted making the whole scarf because I originally started with a single crochet but it made it very stuff so a third of the way through, I pulled it all out and did it with a half double crochet and it turned out very well.
I finished this literally two days before I left town for christmas but this was also part of Jade’s present. baby yoda! I despise patterns and cotton yarn so this was a regrettable choice. I don’t intent to make another ever again.
I also did my first ply yarn from a big bag of roving that I had labeled Icelandic? so who knows what it actually was. This was my second spinning on my flax wheel and it went very well. I did two bobbins of spinning and then plyed them together
The thing I’ve discovered about plying is that it is an absolute nightmare if you don’t have multiple bobbins. My flax wheel only came with one and it’s an antique that is hard to find parts for. So I have to pull all yarn off the bobbin and either put it on the niddy noddy or into a ball before I can spin another set. So what I did for this two bobbins was put one bobbin on the niddy noddy and then take the second bobbin’s worth of yarn directly off the bobbin and wind both at the same time into a plying ball, which is just the two strands wound together into a ball, ready to ply. I then plyed them on my drop spindle because I was afraid I would get too much spin on them using the wheel. This is a process that takes so fucking long. The ball contains a lot more yarn than you think and it takes much longer to put into a ball than you think and then I had to do it in two batches because there was so much and put it on the niddy noddy halfway through.
They ended up very pretty though.
Like a smart person, I decided I was going to make a second ply yarn right after the first. I don’t know what I was thinking.
This is from Llady Llama Fiber Shop, and they do beautiful colored rovings.
It’s a 80% merino, 10% silk, 10% bamboo mix and spins up very differently than the pure wool, longer staple that I did last time. I’m a little concerned I’m putting too much twist on it but it sure looks nice. I just wound the first bobbin (and a partial to complete the whole braid) into a ball and plan to ply from two balls and I’m partway through the second braid now. I’ll ply them from two separate balls this time because it was an absolute nightmare to ply from the same ball. Mostly because I missed some slack in the singles when I was winding them so there was lots of slack yarn in the lines and that is absolute killer because the singles will twist themselves up if they have any slack at all.
I’ve got two crochet projects running right now, both blankets for the purpose of using up yarn. I’m almost finished with one and the other won’t take too long.
Best part of christmas was the fiber gifts!
This purple roving was from a farm local to my parents and looks amazing. I super can’t wait to spin it and love the color.
Flax! I requested this and Mom got it from a farm in Canada who is processing flax, so I’m going to give it a try on the flax wheel next after the green yarn.
I got two skeins of yarn from a local farm and one cake from my aunt as the family gift, which is much appreciated.
My younger sibling also gave me this gr9 book, which I’m excited to read!
All in all, a lot of fiber stuffs!
